Battling the Sandy Flooding/Storm Empty Battling the Sandy Flooding/Storm

Post  dingo3497 Mon Oct 29, 2012 10:23 am

On the East Coast of Virginia and we are under water. The worst flooding I have seen in the 23 years I have lived here. We are completely shut off. I received a text from the power company that our power was being shut off to support more populated areas. Nice huh, it's not the first time. Also the standard call from authorities telling us to evacuate for response to an emergency in my area will be delayed. Again, not the first time hearing this.
The generator has run since Saturday, I have enough fuel for another 48 hours and then I start pulling from the vehicles. Not the first time. We are well stocked and the kids have had a blast since school has been cancelled. No work for me since the military base is on lock down and the hospital hasn't called the wife in yet. Just sharing with you guys a brief glimpse of my life.
The trip to the mountains is right around the corner, it can't come fast enough.

Battling the Sandy Flooding/Storm Empty Oh NO...

Post  Blondie1 Mon Oct 29, 2012 1:30 pm

Oh Dingo, I'm so sorry to hear this. How can you evacuate if you're totally shut off? Do you mean you can't go anywhere to even get gas due to the flooding? Shocked Bless your hearts.

I went without power for 7 days three years ago in that bad snowstorm we had here in Western North Carolina. It wiped out the infrastructure to our power company and there were so many trees and power lines down it looked like the area had been bombed. They had to start from inside out.

The power company had to wench power poles in and the equipment had to be pulled up by sleds cause this was mountains and no vehicles could get to the areas. Those poor guys worked night and day. It was hard seeing the neighbors lights on just down the road when it took 4 more days to get power to my house. But they did take care of sick people who had to have power first with I understood. It took some people 12 days to get the power back on.

I have learned to keep a reserve of water handy to flush the toilet. I bet I have at least 30 two liter bottles filled in the basement just for that purpose. I also keep fresh water in gallon jugs which I replace every week.
My neighbors have a generator and said I could bring anything down there that I needed to which I appreciated.
I also learned the if you run out of water you can drain the hot water heater and use that to flush. Just be sure to cut it off and don't turn the power back on to it till it has water in it. I bet you already knew that.

You can't beat wood stoves can you?

Have you seen any snow yet?

Please keep us updated. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

No snow, it is about 58 degrees. I have come out to my shed for a little r and r. Yea the roads are completely flooded and we are still expecting high tide to hit. The house is on a ridge so no fear there. I suppose if it really came down to it I could hike out to the nearest major road.{3 miles} We are ok and have gone through this more than a few times. I have cords all over the house back tracking to the generator. The fridge is stocked and we are all in good spirits. The longest we have gone without power was several years ago and just about a week. Thanks for your concerns and just happy we have the generator and our health.
