Night time sound in my area Empty Night time sound in my area

Post  CMcMillan Fri Sep 07, 2012 12:49 pm

I have to record it I think.
But I take my dog out at night and she gets all freaked out.
We hear a strange clicking sound its some kinda of animal I think.
its loud enough I hear it. Its not a squirrel chatter it is around 10:00 or 11:00 at night.
But it freaks my dog out and she wants to come in as soon as she hears it.

Skunk or a Raccoon come to mind.
If you record it, maybe you can post it.

I'll have to agree about raccoons and bears. I've heard them. I've heard bears do a lot of things especially when raiding campgrounds in the Smokies. They'll sneak right up on a family sitting around a picnic table eating then only pick the banana pudding. LOL Guess who that happened too?

And raccoons, oh my, they have clicks and they have shrieks that include some kind of clacking, clicking and other sounds that can make the hair on your head stand up.

Kinda glad I know very little about skunks except the one that jumped out of the bushes and followed me to the door of my house when I was carrying a box of KFC chicken.

Did you smell anything?

Well I haven't heard it since.
Its one of the reasons why I like having a dog or dogs.
animals can sense things that we can not.

even my pain in the butt cat.

Thank goodness I didn't know till I saw it in the reflection of the door as I was stepping on the porch. But yea my son thought it was hilarious. Rolling Eyes

I agree about the dogs and cats. They are aware of so much more than we are.

Without knowing what type of area you live in. I would have to ask if the clicking was high pitched or low?

At my cabin there are deer that have a low pitched click that I have heard. Scared the Evil or Very Mad out of me the first time I heard it, and even worse when another answered back.

Could also be a Beetle, many nocturnal species use clicking sounds to attract the opposite sex and also as a territorial defence. These sounds are usually quite loud and depending on size and species can be heard for long distances, some sound similar to a couple of small sticks being hit together, some sound like birds chirping and others sound like a spoon hitting a hollow can. People always presume the sounds of a forest are those of animals and forget the smaller and often much louder world of Insects.

Be cautious. It could be nothing but then again it could be something dangerous. If the dog is alerted to it and not scared enough not to go out, then you are probably ok.

Hey CM, I know what that clicking is ~ I used to hear it at night, too, and the clicks are very clear and distinct. It's a possum. Was a mystery to me too, until I finally saw one running and clicking out in my yard. I think it's a "DANGER" signal, and no doubt they would be afraid of you and your doggie.

Let me tell you possums can be mean and have awful big teeth! I was just trying to get one off my deck when it didn't want to go and I had to go back in the house. It was something else.

Kel When you said it's a danger signal I thought yea as in the one I met was a danger to me! Wink
