Are Bigfoots the Trolls of old?

Post  CMcMillan on Wed Sep 05, 2012 4:15 pm

A troll is a supernatural being in Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore. In origin, one of the meanings of the term troll was a negative synonym for a jötunn (plural jötnar), a being in Norse mythology, although the word was also used about witches, berserkers and various other evil magical figures. In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwell in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings.
Later, in Scandinavian folklore, trolls became beings in their own right, where they live far from human habitation, are not Christianized, and are considered dangerous to human beings. Depending on the region from which accounts of trolls stem, their appearance varies greatly; trolls may be ugly and slow-witted or look and behave exactly like human beings, with no particularly grotesque characteristic about them. Trolls are sometimes associated with particular landmarks, which at times may be explained as formed from a troll exposed to sunlight. One of the most famous elements of Scandinavian folklore, trolls are depicted in a variety of media in modern popular culture. The equivalent being in Shetland and Orkney folklore is known as a "trow".

This is another example of a creature of the past that could be something else.
It makes sense that people in the Middle ages and before ran into creatures like bigfoot in the woods and they became what they call Trolls or Wildman.

I am looking for any Greek references to creatures like bigfoot.

I certainly think they could be. A lot of folklore and myths originate from real phenomena that couldn't be explained at the time. Religion does a lot of that too. I've heard that trolls were another word for wildmen, which could be interpreted as Bigfoot or relic hominids of sorts. They could also just be referring to people who refuse to live in towns and villages and are uneducated, unkempt and frightening in appearance at first glance. I think I might have even read that garden gnomes parody 'trolls' and could therefore be linked to mysteries hairy beasts that once roamed the woods and maybe still do. I know reports of 'Bigfoot' in Europe are few and far between, but I've had a friend in Germany swear his sister had an encounter in a remote spot. Neither are the sort to lie, so failing misidentification, which they would have struggled to do, under the circumstances, I have no reason not to believe them.

More Historical Images of Possible Bigfoot's "Hairy Man"

http://www.bigfoot-lives.com/html/bigfoot_history.html

The first written account of the North American ‘Wildman’ occurred in 986 AD when Leif Erikson and his men landed in the new world. (Several centuries before Christopher Columbus, i might add). In Samuel Eliot Morisons account of the Norse voyages, Erikson mentions creatures which were “horribly ugly, hairy, swarthy and with big black eyes”.4

On this one, I would have to say "No". The description that Lief Erikson gave about "Skraelings." seemed to resemble modern Sasquatch description except that they were using weapons. Why would they call them "Skraelings" and not "Trolls"?

Ogres, however do sort of fit in with Sasquatch.

Lief Erikson was killed by a "Skraeling arrow" lol So though the Skraeling description was strikingly similar to Sasquatch, they were using bows lol
